Put your trade-in in perspective.

Your current car is part of the purchase, but it deserves its own comparison. Keeping the figures separate makes the deal easier to understand.

Know your starting point

Gather your VIN, mileage, condition details, and an up-to-date payoff quote if you have a loan. A payoff quote can differ from the balance shown on your last statement.

Get comparable offers

Request written offers and note inspection requirements, expiration dates, and other conditions. Compare the amount you would receive after payoff and transaction costs.

Separate the numbers

Keep the new-car purchase price, trade allowance, and loan payoff visible as separate amounts. A larger trade allowance does not necessarily mean a lower overall cost.

Plan the handoff

Confirm who handles the payoff and required paperwork. Registration and tax treatment vary by transaction and location; get the applicable figures confirmed in writing.
